Overheard in Hoboken
6-year-old boy to his mother: "Why's he an asshole?" Mother: "Because he is." 6-year-old boy: "But, why?" Mother: "He just is." Was I wrong to assume that they were talking about the poor kid's father?

nah, you're perceptive and may have drawn your conclusion based on other non-verbal behaviors, or subconscious thoughts. Seems probable. though it could have been her boss, an uncle, some cranky neighbor. The father image just makes it all the less of a happy ending which seems sorta Liskian in nature. Nothing personal.
