Hyperbole

David Denby goes off the deep end in The New Yorker this week in his review of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight." Describing Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, he writes: "His performance is a heroic, unsettling final act: this young actor looked into the abyss." Really?! Is that all it takes these days to get a gander at the mythical abyss? I never knew "the abyss" was so accessible! And while we're at it, what's so "heroic" about playing a psychotic villain in a comic book movie? Granted, Ledger probably got pretty close to the edge when he took all those pills, but I suspect he lost consciousness before the abyss came fully into view.

You haven't truly stared into the abyss until you've read the virulent fanboy reaction against the few reviewers who gave the movie negative reviews. The House Next Door gave it the worst trashing I've seen and most of the comments are hateful fanboys mocking the "fancy words" in the review, accusing the reviewer of secretly liking it but just trying to be contrarian, etc. I know that's pretty commonplace at this point among some of these guys but I don't recall seeing it at this level before. It's pretty pathetic how they seemingly can't process or tolerate any dissent over a superhero movie.

Count this an exercise in 'popular metaphysics', but if birth is entering into the consciousness of this "ambiguous, tormented, fleeting, dream-like existence", then losing consciousness, or physiological death, may very well be an entry into a purposeful, blessed, lasting, wakeful existance...true consciousness. The real deal.

I heard the movie was very dark, violent, including torture, and profanity. Abysmal entertainment.

P.S.
This guy had a glimpse of the beyond after he lost consciousness and died. It wasn't religious. Nor was he. No Joke! He's not wearing make-up. This is how a person acts when they've seen something truly abyssmal and lives to talk about it.

and the key to the city. Creepy. The words "....unsettling final act" are too close to the description of his tragic end. Heroic? Perplexing comments. Well-meant attempt to diefy the dead. Just as sick as some of the Joker's lines. Poor Keith Ledger. What a role to go out on.

one final word. you wish.

i guess heroic could be appropriate if his final act had the power to not only scare the hell out of everyone but to scare everyone out of Hell...
